Renovating "20 year old" vinyl covered cabinets
Our clients words.
"Absolutely made up with our utility room make-over! A fantastic and professional approach by John to achieve an amazing finish on what we thought were units fit to throw out; how wrong we were! Will definitely think of Traditional Hand Painted when it comes for our kitchen to be renewed. 5/5!"
There are many reasons vinyl de-laminates from MDF cabinet doors, but its unusual to have the Vinyl covers completely detach from every door and drawer literally!
The client had sent over pictures of the kitchen showing the extent of the failed vinyl. It was clear from the photos all drawers and cabinets had suffered the same fate. The client really didn't want to go to the expense of having the entire utility room replaced given the amount of time required for a refit and the costs involved.
I was happy to inform my client that although the vinyl had failed on all drawers and cabinets, the MDF was not damaged and this would allow me to stripped back the vinyl to the MDF core, remove any traces of adhesive allowing the paint to be applied.
The vinyl covers where easily removed and the surface was sanded to a smooth finish. There are no shortcuts to a solid hard wearing hand painted finish and the first coat of paint is the adhesion primer. This seals the fibres of the MDF and gives a base for the 4 or 5 coats of eggshell paint. The client had chosen a distinctive colour from Little Greene Paint called Air Force Blue (260).
Once the first primer had dried I sanded it flat and applied the next coat of undercoat primer. I prefer to tint this to the chosen top colour to ensure maximum depth of colour. When dry, I de-nibbed the primer before the final 3 top-coats gentle sanding between coats.
In line with our current covid 19 working policy and Scottish government guidelines I was able to work each day for about 1 hour in a well ventilated room to apply the primer then finishing coats to the carcass. I made sure the doors were bone dry before I carefully re-hung them.
I hope you like the finished job. I think you will agree that few people would ever know that this hand painted kitchen started life as a vinyl wrap kitchen. We’re delighted the customer was so happy with the work, and would encourage others out there to rejuvenate their old kitchens rather than bin them!!
