When you have your new pine kitchen initially fitted it will look perfect after the installation; especially if its an in-frame kitchen, meaning the doors fit into the frames rather than sitting in-front of the frame.

Fast forward 20 years and you now have a orange kitchen with wobbly doors and drawers that don't close properly. This is a common issue with pine kitchen-cabinets and is caused by a number of factors:

The orange effect on pine is a natural process of the wood aging. Sun-light is the main cause, especially Ultra-Violet (UV) light. Pine wood contains a chemical called pinoresinol, which can react with ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight to produce a reddish-orange colour.

The poor fitting of doors and drawers can be caused by 3 main factors, Moisture: Pine is a softwood that is susceptible to moisture damage.

Expansion and contraction: Pine is also a natural material that expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity.

Joints: The joints between the stiles and rails of pine inframe kitchen cabinet doors can also become loose over time. This can cause the doors to sag or wobble, making them difficult to close properly.

So having your old pine kitchen restored and hand painted will give your kitchen a new lease of life and restore the cabinets to a factory finish once again. We have just completed hand painting this old pine kitchen for wonderful clients in Glasgow, that loved the feel and look of a natural pine wood kitchen, but wanted to update and lighten the colours in the Kitchen.

I follow a tried and proven process for painting. To achieve a smooth and durable finish, the aim is to ensure a “keyed” surface for each subsequent coat of paint. In other words, I lightly sand down between each coat of paint: 2 coats of primer, 1 coat of undercoat and then 2 top coats in the chosen colour. It is painstaking work, but it is worth it.
